Customs & Border Protection

All passengers arriving at Detroit Metro Airport on international flights must complete U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) entry procedures. CBP counters are located in the International Arrivals Area of the McNamara Terminal and near Carousel 2 of the Baggage Claim Area in the Evans Terminal.

Be sure to declare all items purchased, any currency in excess of $10,000 U.S. or foreign equivalent, and any food, beverages, plant life, or other agricultural items in your checked or carry-on baggage.

• McNamara Terminal: Lower Level (one level below domestic baggage claim)
• Evans Terminal: Level 1 (baggage claim) near domestic Carousel 2

Baggage carts are available to passengers arriving on international flights at no charge in the International Baggage Claim Area, prior to completing CBP inspection.

1. Automated Passport Control

Automated Passport Control kiosks expedite the entry process for US, Canadian and eligible Visa Waiver Program passport holders.

2. Global Entry

Passengers may apply for the CBP Global Entry Program, which grants expedited clearance for low-risk passengers. Passengers must be pre-approved to participate in the Global Entry Program, undergo a background check, pay a $100 non-refundable application fee, and complete an in-person interview before enrollment. Passengers who are conditionally approved have the option to complete their interview upon their return to the United States, following an international trip. 

3. U.S. Pre-Clearance

Through pre-clearance, the same immigration, customs, and agriculture inspections of international passengers are completed before departure at foreign airports. Passengers arriving from parts of Canada and the Bahamas are subject to U.S. pre-clearance prior to their departure to the U.S. and are generally treated as domestic passengers upon arrival at DTW.

4. Standard Entry

Passengers with passports from non-Visa Waiver Program countries must have a valid Visa and see a CBP officer for traveler identification. Wait times for CBP processing may vary based on flight arrival times, flight passenger counts, and other variables.
