YPSILANTI, MI - On January 27, 2022, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) toured the Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti to highlight how critical federal infrastructure funding will benefit airport operations. As part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Dingell helped pass, the Willow Run Airport will receive $815,000 over the next five years for improvement projects.
“Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Ypsilanti’s Willow Run Airport will be able to invest in critical improvements to the Airport’s operations as a corporate, cargo, and general aviation facility,” said Dingell. “Through these aviation grants, we can ensure airports in MI-12 like Willow Run are well equipped to support customers and operate efficiently under the Wayne County Airport Authority. I was grateful to see firsthand today how this funding will benefit Willow Run and strengthen Michigan’s infrastructure.”
“Our Wayne County Airport Authority team appreciates the continued support of U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell,” said Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton. “Willow Run Airport (YIP) has a rich history and plays a key role in our national air transportation system. Over the last two years, federal grant dollars secured by our Michigan congressional leaders have enabled us to reconstruct portions of our airfield to make Willow Run safer for our customers. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Congresswoman Dingell helped pass, makes it possible for us to continue modernizing Willow Run Airport to meet the changing needs of our community. We’re grateful for an advocate like Congresswoman Dingell and pleased she visited YIP to see firsthand Willow Run has a promising future as a hub for innovation and economic development.”
In November 2021, President Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law, which included $15 billion in formula funding to help redevelop airports across the country. Projects that qualify for funding include: improvements to runways and taxiways, terminal development, and noise prevention. The Willow Run Airport will receive a similar tranche of funding from the historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act each year for the next five years. The law also includes an additional $5 billion nationally for FAA towers and facilities funding, which the FAA will distribute among airports in need.
