Airport Authority Police Department seeks public input during reaccreditation process

Jul 28 2021

DETROIT (July 28, 2021) – The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) is seeking input from the public regarding law enforcement at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Willow Run Airport. The solicitation of public input is part of the police department’s Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) reaccreditation process.

Attaining CALEA accreditation—a process the Airport Police Department completed in 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2017—requires the department to comply with more than 480 professional standards. CALEA accreditation signifies the Airport Authority Police Department is among the top-performing law enforcement agencies in the world.

As part of the ongoing review process to maintain this prestigious accreditation, a team of CALEA assessors will examine every aspect of WCAA’s public safety operations. Assessors will observe WCAA public safety personnel, equipment, and operating procedures; interview local public officials; and tour airport facilities.

Members of the community and agency employees are invited to offer comments during a Call-In Session on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. as well as a Public Hearing that will continue from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Both sessions will be held virtually via Webex by Cisco. The Public Hearing may be attended in person at the Public Safety Headquarters, 31399 East Service Drive Detroit, MI 48242.
