The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) Police Department provides 24-hour police services to travelers, visitors and tenants at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Willow Run Airport and Crosswinds Marsh.

DTW is one of the nation’s largest and busiest airports. In this unique environment, our CALEA-accredited police department serves a community of nearly 30 million passengers each year.

Whether you are a first-time traveler, a person picking up a loved one, an airport service provider, or somewhere in between, our officers help ensure you can move through our facilities with little interruption and in a safe manner.

Officers work alongside federal partner agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The WCAA Police Department also receives and provides support to local police agencies.

Our police department has a variety of responsibilities including proactive mobile patrol, foot patrol, as well as traffic direction and control as travelers make their way to and from passenger terminals. Officers monitor for suspicious behavior and criminal activity and respond to calls for service.

Police Facts and Information

  • Passenger Drop Off & Pick Up

When dropping off and picking up at the airport, keep in mind the departures and arrivals levels may be very busy with travelers and vehicle traffic. Please be patient and watch for directions from police officers.

Remember, vehicles may not be left in front of the terminals. Unattended vehicles will be towed.

Cell Phone Waiting Lots and Short-Term Parking are convenient options to avoid waiting in traffic.

The Detective Bureau houses both the Investigative Unit and the Detective Section of the police department. Together, these units investigate crimes, interrupt criminal activity and see to the apprehension and conviction of law violators.

    Special Response Unit
The Special Response Unit (SRU) supports the department in resolving critical incidents involving public safety threats that would otherwise exceed the capabilities of traditional law enforcement first responders and investigative units.

    Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit is comprised of Certified Technicians trained in recognizing explosives and hazardous devices. Technicians are responsible for removing and rendering safe dangerous devices as well as post-blast investigations.

    Canine Unit
The Canine Unit further supports law enforcement operations. A “canine team” is formed when a trained officer/canine handler is paired with a specially trained police dog. Canine teams are used to detect explosives and narcotics on Airport Authority grounds.

    Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)
Crisis Intervention Team members are specially trained police officers who respond to calls involving persons in crisis, the mentally ill, and their families.
