Generally, adults meeting unaccompanied minors upon arrival at DTW should plan to be at the airport at least one hour prior to the flight's scheduled arrival time, park, and come inside the terminal building to meet their arriving traveler. In most cases, adults meeting unaccompanied minors will check-in with the traveler's airline at the appropriate ticket counter (upper level).
Airline counter staffing hours may be limited, so it's critical to verify the procedures for meeting an unaccompanied minor at DTW in advance directly with the traveler's airline.
The airline may issue the adult a special pass allowing them to precede through TSA passenger screening and meet the unaccompanied minor at his/her arrival gate, or will provide other instructions for meeting the young passenger. Either way, an airline representative will bring the child from the aircraft to the designated meeting point, where the adult will be required to provide identification for verification purposes to the airline representative and complete necessary paperwork.
Because the safety of unaccompanied minors is everyone's top concern, requirements for pick-up of unaccompanied minors are strictly enforced. Each airline's unaccompanied minor program may be different, so contact the airline directly for more information.
