Airport Police

The Airport Police Department was established in 1993.  It is responsible for providing law enforcement services to both Detroit Metro and Willow Run Airports 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Aside from regular law enforcement duties and responsibilities, the agency’s primary mission is to support the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) with police response to passenger screening.

The agency is organized along traditional lines of command and control with a chief and deputy chief of police.  The agency is comprised of two major components; Uniform Services and Support Services.  Uniform Services includes Patrol, K-9, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), and the Special Response Unit (SRU).  Support Services includes Training, Records, Communications, ID/Property and Investigations.

The agency’s commitment to excellence in customer service is the cornerstone of its mission.  Part of the success of the Airport Police is its application of modern police practices combined with interagency cooperation at various levels of local, state, and federal government.

Since 2008, the Airport Police Department has been accredited by the  Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) . Accreditation assures the Airport’s travelling public and employees that the Airport Police have achieved a level of service that is recognized as the benchmark for professional law enforcement agencies.
