The Wayne County Airport Authority recently joined the many Southeast Michigan businesses forced to dramatically cut expenditures, including reducing staff. This was a very difficult and unpleasant task which caused anguish not only for the employees losing their jobs, but those of us responsible for initiating the layoff process. While we have offered these employees assistance programs, we understand how difficult the job market is at this time. The Authority is, however, faced with significant revenue shortfalls caused by a reduction in flights, a drop in passengers and a drop in passenger spending. Total passengers are down more than 12% so far this calendar year. We simply are not generating enough revenue from passenger spending and aircraft landings to sustain the employee count we previously had. For those who would suggest that the airport is not as safe, let me assure you that safety and security remain WCAA’s top core values. Our role in helping to keep flights on time as well as facilitating customer service, also continue to be priorities. I appreciate all employees’ contributions to the airports and I wish them all the very best.
