There have been numerous media reports that the Wayne County Airport Authority is considering closing Willow Run Airport—a cargo and general aviation airport which serves as a reliever airport for Detroit Metropolitan Airport. While it is true that a study was conducted which looked at a number of options to deal with a significant reduction in activity and revenue at Willow Run, closing the airport is an option that was taken off the table. Airport management has every expectation that when the economy improves and cargo shipments pick up, Willow Run will continue its role as a valuable resource in the Detroit area air transportation network.
