The construction of the North Terminal here at Detroit Metro Airport is being completed in two phases. Phase I, which is substantially complete and open for business, consisted of demolition of the Davey Terminal and Hotel, and construction of the new 26 gate terminal. The terminal, with the exception of two international wide body gates, opened September 17, 2008 and has been serving the traveling public while punch list items are completed.
Phase II of the project will consist of demolition of Smith Terminal Concourse "C", most recently home of Spirit Airlines, apron work and completion of the two wide body gates.
Concourse "C" is being quickly and efficiently picked apart and hauled away by Bierlein Demolition Services of Bay City. Construction materials removed from the building are being separated and hauled away for recycling and reuse.
The demolition of the concourse is scheduled to be completed by the end of February, and will clear the path for removal, reconfiguration and replacement of the apron paving, installation of a hydrant fuel system and installation of the passenger boarding bridges for the two international gates.
