Big news!  This week, Detroit’s major hub carrier Northwest Airlines announced plans to merge with Delta Air Lines. The proposed combination would create Detroit’s largest airline and would transform the two carriers into a new, truly global airline. 

The Wayne County Airport Authority could not be more excited about the possible opportunities that this merger could mean for Southeast Michigan.  With fuel prices now at record levels, the combined new carrier will be in a better position to compete in the global marketplace and to expand its reach from Detroit--enabling Southeast Michigan to become an even stronger participant in the global economy.  Plus, Detroit Metro Airport will offer the new airline one of the most customer-friendly, efficient and operationally-capable hubs in the world.
