I participated in an important signing ceremony on Wednesday, May 3, with the goal of protecting construction workers on the north terminal project at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). The construction managers at risk, Walbridge Barton Malow, and a host of labor organizations, forged a partnership with the Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration (MIOSHA) committing to a stringent and site specific health and safety program. This is only the second such partnership in Michigan and by far the largest. It is anticipated that a total of more than 1,800 construction workers will be involved in building a modern and efficient new 26-gate north terminal for use by carriers currently flying primarily out of the Smith and Berry Terminals.
I commend the contractors, the State of Michigan and the labor unions for committing to a goal of zero worker injuries for this project.
