The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) have been working for the past ten years to improve the quality of storm water in Michigan and the Unites States. Most large municipalities and large facilities such as airports, universities and hospitals are now required to apply for Phase II Storm Water Permits which specify measures that regulated facilities must undertake to educate residents and employees about the importance of protecting storm water. The MDEQ has pioneered the regulation of municipal storm water discharges in Michigan by promoting a watershed-wide philosophy of permitting.
Detroit Metro Airport has partnered with 15 surrounding communities to become an active member in two watershed organizations (Ecorse Creek and Combined Downriver Watersheds), with the ultimate goal of improving water quality in the Detroit River and lower Great Lakes.
