1. When will the North Terminal Redevelopment project be complete?

Construction started in October 2005. Progress is moving along steadily. The new terminal will open to the public in mid-September 2008.

2. How many new gates will be part of the North Terminal Redevelopment?

The new terminal facility will open with 24-jet gates in September 2008. In the spring of 2009, two (2) additional jumbo jet gates will be added. The facility will be able to expand an additional 5-gates in the future, as additional airlines serve Detroit or the existing airlines expand their service.

4. Will the new terminal construction cause me any problems getting to my flight out of the Smith Terminal?

The North Terminal Redevelopment Project is dedicated to minimizing any confusion or delays related to construction. To date construction confusion and congestion has been very minor. A major milestone was achieved in November 2007 with the re-opening of Upper Rogell roadway. Upper Rogell is the road that is used by all Davey and Smith Terminal departing passenger traffic.

Also in November 2007, all Smith Terminal arriving passenger vehicle traffic was relocated off of the existing lower Rogell roadway and onto the current roadway immediately adjacent to the Blue Deck Parking Facility (this roadway is just west, left side, of the existing lower Rogell). Following the relocation, the portion of lower Rogell in front of the new terminal was closed to enable reconstruction of the roadway, and construction of the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) and pedestrian bridge that will connect the Blue Deck and the GTC to the new terminal. An expansion to the Blue Deck will also be constructed at this time providing an additional 604 parking spaces.

5. Why are you building the North Terminal? Didn’t you just open a new terminal?

The new McNamera (Midfield) terminal accommodates Northwest Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, KLM, Royal Jordanian, British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France. The new North Terminal facility will provide all of the other airlines serving Detroit (i.e. American Airlines, Air Canada, Spirit, Southwest, U.S. Airways, United, AirTran, and Frontier Airlines) with a new world class facility.

6. I heard there may be a Ground Transportation Center as part of the new Terminal. What is this?

In an effort to reduce congestion at the arrivals and departure levels of the new North Terminal, a three level Ground Transportation Center (GTC) will be constructed adjacent to the blue deck. Its primary purpose is to accommodate all commercial vehicle loading and unloading such as rental cars, shuttles, parking lot buses, taxi cabs, and limousines. The GTC is scheduled to be complete and open at the same time as the new North Terminal. As part of the GTC project we are also expanding the existing Blue Deck Parking Facility to provide an additional 604 passenger car parking spaces.
