AOA Vehicle Access Permits

The Airfield Operations Access and Permits Office is responsible for the issuance of vehicle passes for Contractors, Vendors and Airport Tenants requiring access to the Air Operations Area (AOA).

Air Operations Area (AOA) Safety Tour
Tours take place Monday through Friday at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Please allow up to one hour for the tour. Please call in advance to reserve a spot for the tour because spots do fill up. Large groups of eight or more can be accommodated provided advance notice is given. All individuals taking the tour will be required to pass a written quiz.
 
The Process for Requesting Vehicle Access Permits
Individuals, who require unescorted vehicle access to the Air Operations Area (AOA), must first possess a DTW Photo ID Badge with a vehicle access icon. To obtain Vehicle permits the following documents shall be submitted to the Airfield Access and Permits Office: Once all documents numbered 1-4 are submitted please allow up to one (1) business day for the paperwork to be reviewed.
 
(1) Vehicle Access Application
Submit Vehicle Access Application online. Complete all applicable fields, upload required documents, and then submit the application.
 
(2) Tenant or Prime Contractor Letter of Introduction
A letter from the airport tenant or prime contractor, on their company letterhead, introducing your company, outlining the job which you will be performing for them and why driving on the Air Operations Area (AOA) is necessary to perform these job functions.

(3) Company Letter of Introduction
A letter from your company, on your company letterhead, listing the identification number, license plate number, make and model for each vehicle or piece of equipment you are requesting a permit for. Also, include a 24hr contact number and name of someone who can be reached. Please attach this form to the Vehicle Access Application.

(4) Liability Insurance Accord
A Liability Insurance Accord with a minimum of $5, 000,000 in coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
 
Q. How long are vehicle permits valid?
Vehicle permits are issued for up to six (6) months provided all documents are up to date and Liability insurance is valid throughout for at least six (6) months.
 
Q. Do I need a valid DTW picture badge to pick up my companies vehicle permits?
Yes you will need a valid DTW picture badge to pick up permits.
 
Q. Is there a charge for the vehicle permits?
No, at this time there is no charge for the vehicle permits.
 
Q. How many escort passes are allotted for each company?
This is reviewed on a case by case basis by the Airfield Operations Access and Permits Office manager.
 
Q. How often should my paperwork such as Introduction Letters and the Vehicle Access Application be updated?
All of these documents are required to be updated on an annual basis.
 
Q. Are Vehicles required to have logos on them?
Yes, commercially made, company logos are required on both the driver and passenger front doors.
 
Q. Is the Air Operations Area (AOA) Safety Tour required prior to be able to drive a vehicle on the Air Operations Area (AOA)?
Yes, prior to being able to operate a vehicle in the Air Operations Area you must attend the Safety Tour and pass the quiz.
