Traveler with Special Needs   ::  HOW TOs

Requesting assistance from your airline

If you are not accompanied by or met at the airport by a friend, relative or business associate, it is important that you contact your airline to inform them of any assistance you may require, e.g., a wheelchair (departing and arriving), specific seating requests, specific kinds of foods, etc.

Security measures restrict public access beyond passenger screening to ticketed passengers only. However, airlines will allow persons with special needs to be accompanied by health care assistants or guardians. If a friend or family member wants to accompany an elderly or disabled person to or from the aircraft gate, they need to obtain permission from the airline.

Parking

For your convenience, there are reserved parking spaces for travelers with disabilities on every level of the parking structures and in the short term parking lots closest to the terminals. To park in these reserved spaces, official license plates bearing the disabled designation or other official documents issued by a municipality or state of residence must be prominently displayed.

The parking structures at DTW cannot accommodate vehicles over 7’ high. It is recommended that you park in either the Yellow or Green surface parking lots and take a shuttle to the appropriate terminal. To arrange for a wheelchair accessible shuttle van, please call 734-947-0707. During off hours call 800-377-1032.

For additional parking information, please call (734) 947-0707. During off hours call (800) 377-1032.

Ground Transportation

All ground transportation services including parking lot shuttles, taxis, luxury sedans, hotel and car rental shuttles are located in the Ground Transportation Centers on the 4th level of the McNamara Terminal parking structure, or on the outside lower level curb front of the Smith Terminal.

Detroit Metro Airport Taxi Association: For taxi rates, please call 800-745-5191 or visit www.metroairporttaxi.org.

Luxury sedan service: No reservations are required. However, to arrange for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, please call 800-351-5466 or visit www.checkersedan.com.

Transportation between terminals: The terminal-to-terminal shuttle stops are located on the lower level curb front of the Smith Terminal (between the blue and white pillars); and at the McNamara Terminal Westin Hotel (departures level) and in the Ground Transportation Center of the parking structure. Please call Metro Shuttle at 734-651-1909 for a wheelchair accessible terminal shuttle.

Departing

Curbside unloading areas for baggage and passengers are available at each terminal. Skycaps are available to assist you in getting your luggage to the check-in area. Please make arrangements with your airline 24 hours in advance for assistance with baggage check-in, ticketing and movement to the gate area.

Arriving

Please make arrangements with your airline 24 hours in advance for assistance in getting to the bag claim areas. Skycaps are available in the baggage claim areas to help with your luggage.

If a friend, family member or business associate will be driving to the airport to meet you, please understand that they will not be allowed to wait at the curb front for your arrival. It may be more convenient for your greeter to park in a short term lot or area of the parking structure and meet you in the baggage claim area.

Cars standing (not actively loading or unloading at the curb fronts) will be ticketed and unattended cars will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Emergency Services

For medical emergencies, trained emergency medical technicians are available 24 hours per day. In the event of an emergency dial 911 from any airport phone. Calling 911 from a personal cell phone will connect you with the City of Romulus.

Restrooms

In addition to wheelchair accessible restroom facilities, there are 20 “Family” restrooms available in the terminals at DTW. There are also two unisex restrooms – one in the Smith Terminal and one in the Berry Terminal.

TDD/TTY

Telephones that will accommodate the hearing impaired are available in all three terminals at DTW.
