Welcome to Detroit! Whether this is your final destination or you are connecting to another flight, we want to make your entry into the United States simple and quick.
All passengers arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) on international flights must:
1) Complete U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) entry procedures
2) Claim their baggage, unless transferring to another international flight
3) Exit the international arrivals hall to Detroit or to a connecting flight
DTW offers four different options when entering the country. Regardless of the entry procedure, be sure to declare all items purchased abroad, any currency in excess of $10,000 U.S. Dollars, and any agriculture items in your checked or carry-on baggage.
1) Automated Passport Control
Passengers may be eligible to use Automated Passport Control kiosks to facilitate faster entry into the United States. U.S., Canadian, and Visa Waiver Program passport holders are eligible to use the kiosks. The kiosks are currently available in the McNamara Terminal only.
2) Global Entry
Travelers may apply for CBP’s Global Entry program, which allows for expedited clearance for low-risk travelers. Travelers must be pre-approved to participate in the Global Entry program, undergo a rigorous background check, pay a $100 non-refundable application fee, and complete an in-person interview before enrollment.
3) U.S. Pre-Clearance
Through pre-clearance, the same immigration, customs, and agriculture inspections of international travelers, as performed on arrival in the United States, are completed before departure at foreign airports. Passengers arriving from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Halifax, Canada; and Nassau, The Bahamas are subject to U.S. pre-clearance prior to their departure to the United States and are generally treated as domestic passengers upon arrival at DTW.
4) All Other International Travelers
Passengers with passports from non-Visa Waiver Program countries must have a valid visa, enter into a dedicated line, and see a CBP officer at a booth for traveler identification.
Wait times for CBP processing of international passengers may vary based on flight arrival times, flight passenger counts, and other variables. CBP closely monitors wait times for arriving flights at DTW.
Baggage carts are available to customers arriving on international flights at no charge in the international baggage claim area, prior to completing CBP inspection.
