We have been fairly quiet about the events surrounding the attempted terrorist attack on flight #253 on approach to Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Christmas Day, primarily because we know that the federal agencies are conducting an investigation and prosecution. It was difficult to read local newspaper articles implying that the public safety response including, to some extent, the response of WCAA Police and Fire was "botched."
Therefore, it was gratifying to read the comments of FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt revealing that the first responders were not informed of an explosive device on-board the aircraft. This confirms what we have been saying all along. The response by the Airport Authority’s well-trained Police and Fire Departments was appropriate given the information they had. They followed well-established procedures and did a good job. Further, representatives of almost all Departments and Divisions immediately rushed to the airport’s Emergency Command to manage all of the airport-related details surrounding this event. I am proud of our team.
